Humboldt Immersion

We plan to hold the 2022 Humboldt Immersion in person, but will adjust to a virtual format based on health and safety guidelines as necessary.

One of the core components to the Place Based Learning Communities at Cal Poly Humboldt is the Humboldt Immersion. Humboldt Immersion is a series of hands-on field trips, exploration of Humboldt County, laboratory opportunities, and bonding with your peers. This experience will help you understand this place as a Native/Indigenous space and the history and knowledge of this landscape. Faculty, staff, and Peer Mentors will all be involved in Humboldt Immersion to help welcome and engage you as new students to our campus community. Here are some activities from previous Humboldt Immersions:

  • Field trips to local areas to explore Humboldt Bay and Trinidad Bay.
  • Discipline-specific lab experiments to kick off academic
  • Hearing guest speakers and meeting the Humboldt faculty
  • Learning what it means to be a scientist in your field
  • Welcomed to Native ancestral territories by tribal leaders
  • Meeting tribal and non-tribal scientists working on issues that relate to your major/interests
  • Icebreakers with peers in your major and Peer Mentor
